John Hersey Michaelis (Aug. 21, 1912-Oct. 20, 1985) was born in San Francisco, California. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1936, then from the Command and General Staff School in 1942. After service in World War II, Michaelis was commanding general of the U.S. Army, Alaska, from 1959 to 1962, U.S. Army V Corps, Federal Republic of Germany, from 1962 to 1963. He was commander of U.S. Forces Korea, 8th U.S. Army, from 1969 until his retirement in 1972. From...
